Some say that Dunedin is more Scottish than Scotland! Watch the “scarfies” as they scurry around the vibrant university campus and browse the bookshops in the central city Octagon.

Out on the Peninsular you will be captivated by the Royal Albatross colony. There are marvellous penguin watching opportunities too.

Inland, you could try cycling the Central Otago Rail Trail or take the stunning backcountry trip via Dansey’s Pass and Naseby. This is rugged pioneer gold mining country steeped in history with spectacular scenery to entrance you.

The elegant town of Oamaru features some of New Zealand’s best examples of 19th centurary architecture. Oamaru is also renowned for its penguin colonies and was the town in which the author Jant Frame grew up. Oamaru is almost certainly the town of "Waimaru" in her writings.

Nenthorn Valley – Macraes – East Otago

The Nenthorn Farmhouse at Havrincourt Farm offers a peaceful country stay on our working sheep and beef farm in the Nenthorn Valley, East Otago.

Surrounded by open farmland and rolling hills, the farmhouse is ideal for Otago Central Rail Trail cyclists, Southern Way 1000 and self-drive travellers, couples, families and small groups. It sleeps up to 5 guests, with two bedrooms, a sleepout plus a double sofa bed, and has comfortable living areas, a full kitchen, bathroom, laundry and Wi-Fi.

Complimentary self-drive vehicles make it easy to include Havrincourt in your journey. Rail Trail guests can collect a vehicle from Hyde Railway Station for the approximately 25-minute drive to Havrincourt, returning it to Hyde the following morning. Taieri Gorge Train passengers staying two nights or more can use our vehicle from Pukerangi Railway Station. Vehicles are for one return journey and subject to availability.

Our generous breakfast hamper includes home-baked bread when available, butter, jam, farm eggs, homemade granola, yoghurt and fruit compote, milk and bacon. Pancake or waffle ingredients are also provided, along with complimentary hot drinks and a fully automatic coffee machine.

Home-cooked dinners are available by prior arrangement. Havrincourt is a peaceful base for exploring Macraes, Middlemarch and wider East Otago.
